The Dark Matter Project

Miriam Zevalking is an artist and designer based in Leamington Spa. Over the last 18 months Zevalking has collaborated with Trinity Catholic School on their 2013-14 project “Dark Matter”, to produce a series of 100 painting’s that include acrylic on canvas and watercolour sketches.

This is Zevalking tenth public show of her artwork. Her previous exhibits of “Kitsch Lilies” have featured in the Parallax Art Fair, Chelsea London. The paintings have also been shown in several locations in Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Birmingham.

“The Dark Matter of Roses” project represents a fusion of art and fashion. The artist first began painting dead roses before moving on to the flowers in full bloom. The rose paintings developed into sculptural rose gowns. This exhibition of painted roses and self-portraits will lead onto a runway show featuring the artists hand cut couture gowns later this year.

Miriam Zevalkings floral fascination continues…

“I am captivated by the rose’s beauty. The emerging cylindrical shapes, the emerging buds that break out into bountiful bloom – bosom like. Then as their lives wane and depart, they retreat and contort and their petals curl up and die and new intricate detailed patterns appear. A new series of paintings arise; “The Dark Matter of Roses” is born. The petals swim in antique glory, confidently emitting vivacity and strength.”

Zevalking intentionally embraced the life cycle of the roses backwards, from death to life. The paintings portray both the beauty of the roses and ephemerality. And celebrate the exquisite flowers flourishing.

What stylistic enigmas roses are. Artists and designers have sought throughout history to put pencil to paper or brush to canvas to honour and ultimately emulate some off these endlessly alluring beauteous blooms; The Rose. In endless adoration the rose has been reproduced throughout history and replicated with endless exquisite visual spheres.

The setting of the roses follows the changing patterns of light of the day and night. There are roses at; dawn, high noon, in the golden sun, dusk, twilight, moonlight, midnight, the silver light of the moon.

“I am driven by my desire to paint. My paintings show themselves in my dreams day and night. They haunt my consciousness. They are visions that demand my full attention. I dream in paint, I think in paint, I live in paint I often become the subject of my paintings. At times aspects of my soul are revealed in the paintings imagery. Either I become the flower or the flower becomes me. When I cry my flowers share my tears. When I am in deep pain the flowers wither and crack at its seams. When I am strong and bold and filled with desire the roses become striking and fierce and breathe fire back into my soul. I am led to tell stories of the rose that often are the stories behind my eyes. Ultimately I am the flower and the flower sees me.”
